Kazimierz Dąbrowski was far ahead of his time in discovering that psychoneurosis is not an illness. His Theory of Positive Disintegration reframes maladjustment as potentially positive. "Positive maladjustment" is typical for gifted individuals with high developmental potential who experience inner conflict and neurosis as they grow. Before reaching high development, an individual enters Unilevel Disintegration (Level 2). This phase is highly dangerous and can lead to psychosis or suicide, proving that developmental potential can be a tragic gift. However, if they successfully reach Multilevel Disintegration (Level 3) or Directed Multilevel Disintegration (Level 4), inner transformation permanently blocks a return to Level 1 (Primary Integration). While most people remain permanently at Level 1, those who reach Level 2 will either regress back to primary integration or advance toward higher personal growth.
